Big improvements are coming to I.B. Magee Beach Park, one of the most popular stops for a TX family beach vacation and a favorite destination for visitors planning a Port Aransas vacation.
A nearly $1.2 million renovation will bring a new ADA-accessible boardwalk, shaded kiosks, upgrades to the park's retention pond, and additional RV sites. The project is funded through the RESTORE Act, which was established following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill to support Gulf Coast restoration efforts.
The original plans included approximately 1,250 feet of boardwalk, but additional federal funding has expanded the project significantly. The finished boardwalk will stretch more than 3,400 feet, looping around the newly renovated pond and connecting to a new parking area near Cotter Road. Construction will also include a new ramp and concrete sidewalks to improve accessibility for all visitors.
Corpus Christi-based Mako Contracting LLC is leading the work, alongside improvements at nearby Padre Balli Park. Together, the two projects represent more than $6.6 million in investments to enhance the Texas Gulf Coast experience.
The timing couldn't be better. I.B. Magee Beach Park was recently recognized as the 10th Best Beach in Texas in USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards, making it an even more attractive destination for families looking for things to do in Port Aransas.
