Talks of Improved Hurricane Evacuation Routes in Corpus Christi Area

Blog June 27, 2026

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has narrowed down route options for a proposed regional parkway that would connect North Padre Island to the south side of Corpus Christi. The project is also being closely watched in Port Aransas because it could improve hurricane evacuation routes for Mustang Island and nearby coastal communities.

After reviewing several possible corridors, TxDOT has focused on two remaining options: the “green” and “orange” routes. The orange route would run from Park Road 22 on North Padre Island to State Highway 286 and County Road 18. The green option would improve State Highway 358 (South Padre Island Drive), potentially through widening, elevated lanes, or a mix of both.

Other proposed routes have been dropped. A Yorktown Boulevard option was removed due to community feedback and design issues, while additional alternatives were eliminated because of impacts to the King Ranch area.

Officials say the remaining plans are still conceptual, with no final route selected. More studies and public input will determine the final design in the next phase of the project.

More information is available through TxDOT’s regional planning page at txdot.gov/regionalparkway.html.

For Coastal Bend residents, the project remains important due to its potential to improve evacuation times and overall traffic flow between the island and the mainland.
